After waiting for New York to legally recognize gay marriage, these gents will wed on their 20th anniversary.

As John Lennon once wrote, “You never know when, you never know where, you never know how and you never know why you love ... it is only important that you love!”

And on Sept. 2, 1992 Adrian and I met quite by the miracle of two people being at the same place at the same time. All I wanted that afternoon from Tower Records was a Bette Midler CD and I got a whole lot more—the guy of my dreams, the one person to complete the picture. I knew immediately that he was the one for me. I felt that certain “click” in my heart. It took him slightly longer to admit to his feelings, but here we are 19.5 years later, preparing to marry on our 20th anniversary, Sept. 2, 2012.

We became domestic partners rather quickly and always fantasized about marrying when and if New York came to its senses.

As a wedding celebrant/officiant licensed to marry fabulous couples in New York (as well as every other state), I yearned to be able to marry, too! And, lo and behold, it happened. Finally courage roared and New York, officially embracing same sex couples and said “Yes! You, too, can marry!”

I was so excited and wanted to marry immediately, but Adrian thought we should wait until our 20th anniversary. Having little patience, I agreed but told him that it will be a real wedding. Lock, stock and barrel. And it is! We are planning an all-out wonderful celebration of us, with friends, family and love.

There was no need to verbalize our proposal … we knew it in our hearts, we always did. All we want is to share our happiness with all the important people in our lives.

After performing so many weddings for so many wonderful couples, both straight and gay, I always pined for the day for someone to marry us. And that day is here and we are getting married and ain’t life great?

On Sept. 2, 2012, we’ll say “I Do” at The Water Club in New York City.
