Garden State Gusto for Gay Marriage Grows

The Garden State’s gusto for gay marriage has grown. Fifty-two percent of New Jersey voters support marriage equality, according to a Quinnipiac poll released on Thursday, the Star-Ledger reports. Support came in at 49 percent in April 2009—the last time support was nearly as high.

However, 42 percent of Garden State voters oppose marriage equality. Poll Director Maurice Carroll broke down the poll.

“Democrats are making same-sex marriage their big opening issue and New Jersey voters support them,” Carroll said. “There are demographic splits—Catholics are more supportive than Protestants. All groups support same-sex civil unions. Most groups support allowing same-sex couples to adopt children, while black voters are divided on that issue.”

Increasing support prompted no turnabout from Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Christie believes the marriage equality push is futile.

“[Marriage equality advocates have] never been able to get it to a governor’s desk. They couldn’t get it to a governor’s desk when the governor [who] was there said he would sign it,” he said in WCBS 880 interview.
