Wedding Gown Designer Program Brings Shopping Experience into the Home

Searching for the wedding dress should be one of the most memorable experiences of the wedding planning process. There’s something to be said about the moment you look into the mirror after trying on who-knows-how-many styles and being able to picture yourself walking down the aisle toward your future wife.

But not every salon experience is as cinematic as movies portray. Whether you’re a shy bride who prefers to make the decision without the fuss, or you’ve experienced not-so-nice stylists at your local shop, there is no “right” way to choose your wedding dress, which is why we are loving wedding gown designer Kirstie Kelly’s Borrow Me program.

kirstie-kelley-wedding-dress

Brides have the option to actually try on the beautiful gowns in the comfort of their home, while still receiving the impeccable advice, remotely, from Kelly’s talented team. “In today's shopping market, we have had the privilege of being able to purchase clothing online,” explains Sarah Alderete, bridal stylist and Borrow Me program manager. “We wanted to bring that option to brides as well. With busy work schedules, family obligations, etc., we wanted brides to be able to try on wedding gowns in the comfort of their own home around friends and family.”

For $35, brides can borrow a gown for two days, taking her time with the decision-making process. Sarah is as hands-on as needed, helping you learn how to take your own measurements (bust, waist and hip), deciding which size to select, assisting in fit and fabric choices, and more.

“All brides are uniquely different in their own way,-but I have noticed that working women love the option of trying the gown at home,” Sarah explains of her typical client. “Brides who live in busy cities like Los Angeles, Chicago and New York love the option of not having to deal with traffic and cab fare. Additionally, brides in rural areas that are limited to local shops can now try on the gowns they didn't have access to before. Brides who want custom gowns are more prone to go to a bridal salon.”

kirstie-kelley-borrow-me-program-wedding-dresses

Choose from Kelley’s frothy Anemone gown (left), classic Lily (middle), fashion-forward Dahlia (right), and more. You can also borrow accessories and bridesmaid dresses. “A bride can try on as many gowns as she chooses, it all depends on what she loves,” says Sarah.

And the experience is completely up to you -- have friends over for a viewing party, complete with Champagne and cake, or make it intimate with just your fiancée or best friend. No two brides are alike, and, when it comes to shopping for the dress, it’s nice to know that we have options.

6 Amazing Bridal Outfits (Beyond the Wedding Dress and Suit)

By Brittny Drye

Let's face it, there is a whole rainbow of fashion between the suit and the wedding gown, and many personal styles fall somewhere along that spectrum. We scoured through our Real Weddings for inspiration to bring you six amazing bridal outfits that go beyond the traditional attire.

Lacey wore a breezy ensemble that perfectly captured her and Jessica’s beautiful beach wedding in Puerto Vallerta.

Jeri’s couture top draped beautifully on her petite frame, and was cut from the same fabric as her bride’s gown. Her crisp white pants were from Burberry and she paired them with fashionable black high-heeled sandals.

Lauren’s purple button-down paired nicely with her beloved’s gown, which featured an embellished pop of color.

Yelena wore an elegant cream-colored tiered dress, and topped off her look with an oh-so-au courant straw sun hat threaded with fabric detailing.

Beth searched on and offline for the perfect pairing of white tuxedo pants and sleeveless top, and finally found the look she desired from Theory at Neiman Marcus.

This silky layered look that Paige wore is in perfect juxtaposition to her bride's feminine and flirty feathered skirt. The collar gives it a touch of structure while the plunging neckline keeps it sexy.

For their Jamaican nuptials, Emma wore a tailored vest with a pressed handkerchief in the breast pocket, paired with long white linen pants for a light and airy look. “We’re not very ostentatious, so simplicity and earthiness were definitely key elements,” said her bride.

Best Dressed of the 2013 Oscars

By Brittny Drye

Call us biased, but our favorite looks from Sunday night’s festivities were, of course, wedding-worthy. Romantic ball gowns, classic three-piece suits and more walked the red carpet at the 2013 Oscars. See which celebrities made our best-dressed list.

jennifer-lawrence-oscars-best-dressed-dior

Jennifer Lawrence dressed to win in an ivory-cream fit-and-flare gown by Dior. The Best Actress winner elegantly swept her hair up in a loose updo and accessorized with sparkling diamond earrings.

daniel-day-lewis-oscars-best-dressed

Daniel Day-Lewis may not have surprised us with this Best Actor win, but the actor looked Old Hollywood chic with a touch of rebel in Domenico Vacca. He accessorized the sharp midnight blue suit with a single pocket square and bow tie and nailed the slim-lapel proportions.

amy-adams-oscars-best-dressed-oscar-de-la-renta

Amy Adams's frothy, ruffled Oscar de la Renta dress had us swooning. The pale grey color gives a nod to the subtle color trend that’s been circulating amongst brides and the sweetheart bodice and ballgown skirt says classic bride.

christoph-waltz-oscars-best-dressed

Christoph Waltz looked polished in a navy slim fit suit with a simple black bow tie.

octavia-spencer-oscars-2013-best-dressed

Octavia Spencer reached for her go-to designer Tadashi Shoji and we’re so glad she did. She looked gorgeous in her off-the-shoulder cream gown and the chiffon added a touch of romance to it.

Chris Pine looked dashing in a double-breasted suit, giving it a fresh take with the slim fit.

charlize-theron-oscars-best-dressed-dior

In our eyes, Charlize Theron can do no wrong and she proved it to us once again last night as she walked the red carpet in Dior Couture. She looked positively statuesque in a dress detailed with peplum (another bridal trend) and sporting a new chic haircut.

bradley-cooper-oscars-2013-best-dressed-tom-ford

The three-piece suit is truly making a comeback and we’re loving the Tom Ford look that Bradley Cooper wore, featuring powerful, extra-wide lapels. Plus, you always earn bonus points when you have Mom as your date.

zoe-saldana-oscars-2013-best-dressed

Zoe Saldana’s Alexis Mabille Couture gown was pure eye candy with textured floral applique at the bust and belt that cinched her tiny waist.

Pairing a velvet slipped with a classic Alexander McQueen tuxedo is a risky move, but when done right, it also receives big rewards. Well done, Eddie Redmayne.

Kristen Stewart’s gown-of-choice was a beautiful blush Reem Acra number featuring hand-beaded detailing and pleated tulle inserts, which would be show-stopping for a vintage glamour wedding.

10 Expert Tips for Dress Shopping

By Brittny Drye

Jenny Packham wedding gowns, Spring/Summer 2013 Collection

You got the gal, now you just need the dress. Whether you dream of a frothy ball gown or a delicate lace sheath, many brides excitedly anticipate the shopping experience. Unfortunately, between rushing to appointments, not being fully prepared and working with rude customer service, the dream can quickly become a nightmare. We asked Gabriella Risatti, owner of Gabriella New York Bridal Salon, to share her expert tips for wedding dress shopping.

wedding-dress-shopping-tips-gabriella-new-york-salon1. Do your homework: This is a really exciting step toward your happily ever after, so do a bit of research beforehand. First and foremost, make sure that the store you’re going to is LGBT-friendly—nothing is worse than finding The Dress followed by a rude remark when you mention your bride.

* Find gay-friendly wedding stores in your area
in our Local Resources Marketplaces. *

Also, Gabriella recommends taking some time to look through magazines and online to get an idea of what types of gowns you are most attracted to and excited about.

2. Don't go to more than three shops in one day: “Trying on wedding dresses can be exhausting!” exclaims Gabriella. “Going to more than three shops in a day will just exhaust you and make the experience feel like work instead of fun.”

3. Go alone the first time: Gabriella recommends doing a scouting trip first, sans the friends and family, to prevent opinions from clouding your judgment. “This way, when your loved ones come back with you, they will know that they are only seeing gowns that you already like.”

4. Keep an open mind: Even if you think you know exactly what you like, take the advice of your bridal consultant and try on additional gowns. “They are experts and you may just be surprised at how beautiful you look in a different silhouette!” she notes.

5. Do your hair and makeup before gown shopping so you feel like your best self: Try to plan your hair and/or makeup trial before your dress shopping so you get a sneak peek at the complete look. “You want to look your very best when you put on a wedding gown. Even if that just means putting on a little lipstick, do it!”

6. Bring similar shoes: Whether you’re wearing stilettos or sneakers, wear the same type of shoe while shopping so you can ensure the length will be the same.

7. Don't wait for tears: “People often think they should have an out-of-body experience when they find ‘the one,’" explains Gabriella. “The reality is, that doesn't happen to most women. So, when you find the wedding dress that you love, go for it, whether you get emotional or not.”

8. Sleep on it: If you aren't 100 percent sure about the dress, Gabriella recommends taking a night to think about it. “It's a big decision and if you wake up still thinking about it, then you can be rest assured it's the right dress for you."

9. Allot enough time per store: Most bridal appointments are between 60 and 90 minutes, so make sure you schedule accordingly. You don't want to be rushed because you have to be at your next appointment.

10. Have Fun: Above anything else, make sure to keep the dress shopping experience fun. “It’s easy to get caught up in the stress of planning a wedding, but try to stay focused on the fact that gown shopping is really just like playing dress-up with beautiful gowns,” she says. “Regardless of which dress you select, after it's all over, you will be married to the person you love, and that is the most important part of it all.”

New York Fashion Week Trends: From the Runway to the Aisle

By Kirsten Ott Palladino

Now that New York Fashion Week has wrapped, we're reviewing the trends to see what might translate well from the runway to the aisle.

One oft-spotted look in the fall shows for spring was the exposed midriff, such as this number from Marchesa. We'd have to do a lot Pilates to pull this off though.

Next up is a dapper little number we envision on a sporty lesbian for a beach wedding. Sexy, no?

Who says you have to wear an all-white wedding dress? OK, maybe your mom. But if you want to rock a frock with color, we're loving this floral trend for a spring wedding, especially somewhere tropical!

As evidenced at New York Fashion Week Spring 2013 and the Grammys, black and white is a major trend. Reem Acra pulls it off with elegance and mystique.

Suit Style Spotlight: J.Crew for the Sporty Lesbian Bride

By Ryan Roschke

SSS is back, and this time we’re focusing on the more masculine bride. If a wedding dress isn’t quite your style but you're not interested in wearing menswear either, don't fear. J.Crew has a stellar selection of suits for women.

We’ve put together a dapper wedding outfit for $1,071. A gorgeous look, no tulle or bodice needed!

Suit idea for the sporty lesbian bride | J. Crew Ludlow suit

Collection Women's Ludlow Jacket in Italian Wool: $375
Collection Women's Ludlow Trouser in Italian Wool: $195

A tuxedo shirt with a women's suit for a dapper wedding outfit | J.Crew

Thomas Mason for J.Crew Tuxedo Shirt in Blue: $158

Suede oxford shoes for the lesbian bride | J.Crew

Suede Oxfords: $228

For this outfit, it’s all about the navy. A navy suit is a great way to create a sleek look without resorting to black. The women’s Ludlow jacket and trousers offer a rich, blue color, a menswear-inspired silhouette, and a gorgeous, high-quality wool fabric. To help escalate the look to a more formal level, we’ve paired the suit with a pair of stunning pewter suede oxfords. Up on top, we’ve selected a light blue Thomas Mason tuxedo shirt as an homage to the traditional black tie wedding. Light blue makes a stellar pair with navy, and the tuxedo detailing adds a cohesive elegance.

Pearl earrings | J.Crew
Pearl Stud Earrings: $50

Silk tie for lesbian bride | J.Crew
Silk Cambridge Tie: $65

Finally, for accessorizing, we found a pair of pearl studs (a fun nod to typical bride garb). If pearls aren’t your thing, feel free to supplement with the jewelry of your choosing, and remember that it’s always best to keep it simple. We also borrowed a blue silk Cambridge tie from the men’s department to complete the look. When selecting a tie (especially if it’s from a men’s line), it’s best to find one in a skinny style to keep the your frame nice and elongated.

Designer Peter Som Partners with BHLDN to Launch Wedding Dress Collection

By Kirsten Ott Palladino

BHLDN-peter-som-wedding-dresses-2

BHLDN, Anthropologie’s wedding brand, is partnering with Peter Som to create a collection this spring. Som, whose established clients include Claire Danes, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scarlett Johansson, culled inspiration from his ready-to-wear collection with a twist on the traditional wedding gown.

The collection, launching on March 15 at BHLDN.com and at the brand’s Houston and Chicago store locations, will mark Som’s foray into the world of bridal.

BHLDN-peter-som-wedding-dresses-1

The line includes two gowns and one special occasion dress made exclusively for BHLDN that look and feel like Som’s ready-to-wear designs. Prices range from $1,200 to $3,000.

American fashion designer Peter Som's designs have captured the eyes of editors and fashion-savvy stars for more than 15 years. The former creative director of Bill Blass launched his own line in 2001. But his ability to grasp flowing femininity for brides was evident early on, as documented with his colonial-chic custom skirt for Keira Knightley for this June 2007 Vogue pictorial:

Twigs & Honey Launches Enchanting Wedding Gown Collection [PHOTOS]

By Brittny Drye

We’ve swooned over the images dancing off of the pages on Twigs & Honey’s website, most of which were captured by the ever talented Elizabeth Messina, while coveting the dreamy bridal headpieces, veils and belts. We may have even tried our hand at recreating some of the whimsical looks with designer Myra Callan’s craft book Adornments.

But now they’ve taken another highly fashioned step toward bridal bliss by offering a wedding gown collection, composed of five heavenly designs that feature sweet aspects such as dainty velvet ties, hand crinkled silk organza, and buttery duchess silk satin.

Over a year in the making, the collection was handcrafted in Portland Ore., where Myra worked closed with the local garment factories to bring her visions to life. Fall in love with the collection below:

Expert Spotlight: Ariel Arrow of Duchess Clothier

By Brittny Drye

expert-spotlight-ariel-arrow-duchess-clothierEach month, we’re highlighting one of our favorite wedding experts, from designers to photographers, florists to planners, and everyone in between, and finding out what inspires them to be a part of one of the biggest days in a couple’s lives. Today we're highlighting Ariel Arrow, Duchess of FIt at the bespoke suit style house Duchess Clothier.

As the bespoke suit industry slowly begins to target women as well as men, small style enterprises such as Duchess Clothier are beginning to find themselves in the spotlight. Based out of Portland, Ore., the once one-woman show, founded by Seyta Selter, has expanded to a full grown business, at which Ariel heads up the day-to-day fashion operations.

How do you start off your typical day?

I’m someone who likes to be out of the door within 30 minutes of getting out of bed. My working mornings typically start off with a black tea and soy milk, a mountain of emails and a few jokes with the girls. When I really need to get motivated, I put on Michael Jackson’s Thriller as soon as I get to the office. I’m not a particularly huge MJ fan, but that song has some magical morning power.

What inspires you?

History

If you could describe your signature style in one word, what would it be?

Equestrian

ariel-arrow-duchess-clothier

How has the marriage equality movement affected your designs and/or business?

Duchess Clothier has been providing custom made suits for men and women since 2005. It has been such an amazing experience to grow in our capacity to make suits for women for their weddings over the past seven years, and we are so proud to be a part of marriage equality by providing this service. We have always gotten most of our business through word of mouth, so we are doing more and more suits for women every year.

If you weren’t a fashion designer, what would you be?

An interior designer … or maybe an orca trainer.

If you could design a suit for anyone, who would it be and what would it look like?

I would love to design a suit for Barak Obama. Honestly, given the fashion constraints of his current job it probably wouldn’t be that exciting of a suit, but it would amazing to meet him and make something for him.

Celebrity Style: Pocket Squares

By Jennifer Dome

There’s one accessory that completes a formal look, making a tuxedo or suit more sophisticated and, therefore, one should never should walk down the aisle without it. That item is a pocket square.

Celebrities (and celebrity stylists) have known for some time that a pocket square is not only classic, but also lends pizazz to the well-cut suit or elegant tuxedo. Here are our picks for top-notch pocket square styling by some of Hollywood’s hottest.

celebrity-style-daniel-craig-pocket-square

DANIEL CRAIG

When it comes to a tuxedo—and a pocket square—it doesn’t get more quintessential than Bond himself. Craig knows how to wear a tux and a classic white pocket square is the perfect touch. But he goes for a more casual look, too, with a brightly patterned fabric that’s folded with a puff, rather than the straight lines of the one-point fold.

celebrity-style-john-slattery-pocket-square

JOHN SLATTERY

Very few men on television are as well dressed as the characters in Mad Men, and Slattery is the picture of a perfect gentleman with this charcoal gray three-piece suit and a tri-fold, crisp white pocket square.

celebrity-style-diane-keaton-pocket-square

DIANE KEATON

The actress known for making men's suits work on women in Woody Allen's Annie Hall, Keaton is still wearing the look today and looking fabulous. Here, she shows that individuality in a classic tuxedo with a classic white pocket square—perfect for a movie premiere or your wedding day!

celebrity-style-jude-law-pocket-square

JUDE LAW

Is there anything more dapper than an Englishman in a hat? Only if he’s wearing a two-point pocket square that matches the blue of his eyes and trimmed with a pop of white.

celebrity-style-paul-walker-pocket-square

PAUL WALKER

The mix of prints is what makes Walker’s look extraordinary. The plaid pocket square brings together the stripes in his shirt and the polka dots in his tie, but the added colors in the fabric move the style even farther forward than a simple blue-and-white plaid would.

Celebs Rock Wedding Gowns at Golden Globes

By Brittny Drye

Last night, the Golden Globes proved that the worlds of wedding and fashion are beginning to blend. The bridal chic trend continues from last year’s awards season, when many leading ladies wore aisle style attire down the red carpet.

This year, not only did stars such as Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, and Hayden Panettiere don wedding-worthy white couture ensembles, but three celebs wore actual wedding gowns.

Wedding Bands For Everyday Wear

By Kirsten Ott Palladino

Wedding bands are such a personal investment. You want it to speak volumes about who you are match not only your dressed-up self, but your everyday wear, as well. These four bands caught my eye for their glitz but also for their ability to be worn with everything ... and with nothing. (Insert a naughty winking emoticon here.)

Jesse Tyler Ferguson Unveils Wedding Bow Tie for Marriage Equality

jesse-tyler-ferguson-tie-bar-signature-formal-bow-tie

This fall, we fell head over heels in love with Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s bow tie collection for TheTieBar.com, featuring designs that ranged from rustic plaid to bold stripes to whimsical florals, combining elements of humor, style and individuality.

Though utterly charming, the colorful designs limit the formality. Luckily, Ferguson and his fiancé Justin Mikita unveiled their first formal bow tie for the collection dubbed “The Signature: Wedding Bow Tie.”

Personally designed by the adorable duo, the limited-edition bow tie is handmade (100 percent silk), available in adjustable sizes and features a hip, owl print design, a prominent symbol for collection which, according to Ferguson, “Owls symbolize wisdom, foresight and patience, all traits that we see in individuals that are fighting for marriage equality.”

The tie will be available online and retail at $25 with all proceeds going toward Ferguson and Mikita’s Tie the Knot organization which supports marriage equality.

Many brides this year skipped the veil and accented their hairstyles with lovely silk flowers. In our Real Weddings, Diane and Sonya as well as Deborah and Beth chose to sport the trendy look. Hair Comes the Bride and Etsy have incredible pieces, and a quick and easy how-to will allow you to do the ‘do yourself.

BUTCH FASHION LINES

Queer fashion line Marimacho made waves this year, and we just can’t get enough. Owned and created by Crystal and Ivette Gonzáles-Alé, the couple focuses on masculine styles. They became such a hit last year that they plan to launch a made-to-measure suit line that will include suits and tuxedos, perfect for those masculine-minded brides. Another addition to lesbian fashion was Fourteen, a stylish collaboration between gay wedding planning firm 14 Stories and designer Marialexandra.

LOVELY LACE

Without a doubt, the wedding gown accent of the year has definitely been lace. Intricate long sleeves, illusion necklines, and embroidered lace edges create an ultra femme look. The graceful style has also been seen on gloves and on bowties.

Suit Style Spotlight: Topman

By Ryan Roschke

Get excited everyone, because SSS is back and this time we’re tackling Topman, the well-known and well-loved brand from across the pond. Gird your loins, because we’ve put together a killer look, just for you!

As a great base for the outfit, we found a stellar black skinny tux jacket. Instead of opting for a full tuxedo, though, we’ve decided to mix and match to add a little flair.

Our favorite part about this look (and a lot of the other clothes at Topman) is the small details. Check out the black stripe along the waist of the navy contrast trousers, as well as the black collar tips on the white button-up shirt. These bits of black throughout the outfit give it a supreme sense of cohesion and elegance without going overboard. It’s also important to note that darker shades of navy might clash with black. Take note, the lighter the better.

To accessorize, we paired the outfit with a plain black bowtie and pair of gorgeous “hi shine” lace-up shoes. Also be sure to throw in a unique pair of black polka dot suspenders (or, in British terms, braces), just to add a little surprise when you remove your jacket. We opted for suspenders over a belt this time to show off the pant detail.

Going for this look is sure to have you looking smashing for your big day. Be wary though, these stores are pretty scarce in the U.S., so prepare for some serious hunting. Or, you know, just order online.
