Some of the most magical places in the world are bioluminescent bays. Like their name suggests, these rare bodies of waters are filled with phospholuminescent microorganisms that brilliantly light up when agitated. The bay water becomes a bright blue-green, creating a magical paradise perfect for any honeymoon adventure.

Bioluminescent bays are all over the world though many of the locations, such as Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, are not LGBT-friendly. If you want to take a dip in the ethereal waters, we suggest jumping in in Puerto Rico, where there are three: Mosquito Bay (aka “The Bio Bay”) in Vieques, La Parguera in Lajas and La Laguna Grande in Fajardo.

MOSQUITO BAY

Vieques is a small island off the east coast of the main island. The bio bay is said to be the most brilliant of all the bays in Puerto Rico. Abe’s Snorkeling and Bio Bay Tours provides a two-hour guided kayak tour, which includes educational discussions about the natural flora and fauna of the lake. Tours exploring the lake with clear canoes is available through Vieques Adventure Company. For a more relaxed experience, Island Adventure Biobay Eco-tours provides bay tours via electrically powered double-pontoon boats.

LA LAGUNA GRANDE

La Laguna Grande is located on the northeastern tip of the main island, facing the British and American Virgin Islands. This bay is said to be the second best of the Puerto Rican bays, and is easily accessible for kayak exploration. Yokahu Kayaks and Kayaking Puerto Rico offer evening tours through the mangrove trees that surround the bay to the most illuminated waters.

LA PARGUERA

Lajas is a small town in the southwest part of the island. Similar to Mosquito Bay, night kayak on La Parguera and boating tours are available through local vendors and companies. Although it is the smallest and least brilliant of the bays, it is still beautiful. Check out Rincon Vacations, which just added a honeymoon registry so you can choose from a wide variety of their watersports, adventure or cultural tours, and spa activities. Their bioluminescent bay tour is one of the few in the country that allows swimming in the lighted waters.
