Lesbian soccer superstar Abby Wambach, 33, married her longtime girlfriend Sarah Huffman, 29, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, at a posh resort in Hawaii. The pro soccer players exchanged vows in a sunset ceremony on the beach at the Villas at Po’ipu Kai on the island of Kauai.

The intimate gathering was attended by several members of the Team USA soccer team, including Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux, who shared their involvement in the wedding festivities through Twitter and Instagram (see below). The couple—and their guests—enjoyed the R&R on the island adventurous activities, including hikes, cliff diving and a boat trip.

The couple has a house in Portland, Ore., and were teammates last season for the Western New York Flash, the runners-up in the first-year National Women’s Soccer League. Wambach led the Flash in scoring and was league runner-up for MVP. Huffman, a former standout at the University of Virginia, was a starting midfielder and defender.

They were previously teammates with the Washington Freedom and magicJack in the WUSA and WPS. Wambach took to Twitter at 5 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Oct. 9, to thank her supporters for the well wishes.

“I knew about Abby’s engagement, I played with Abby for years,” former teammate Brandi Chastain told USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday. “I’m very happy for her like I am for all my teammates and friends who get to experience that love that goes along with getting married. I’m thrilled for her.”
