The state legislature is likely to consider a landmark bill that will allow gays and lesbians to legally marry. The vote could happen in a matter of weeks. Joe Solmonese, president of HRC, sent out a message to the organization’s members asking for financial assistance to get this ad by New Yorkers United for Marriage on New York TV. The new umbrella group, includes HRC and three state-based groups: Empire State Pride Agenda, Freedom to Marry and Marriage Equality New York. Joe writes, ” We’ve been this close before—just a year and a half ago—when the New York State Senate failed to pass marriage equality. But public opinion has shifted in our favor with 58 percent of New Yorkers supporting marriage equality—support that comes from all over the state, from people young and old, and of all political parties. We’re also fortunate to have the unwavering support of Governor Andrew Cuomo.Still, we are taking nothing for granted. Our opponents, including the National Organization for Marriage, aren’t holding anything back to defend outdated, anti-LGBT policies in New York and elsewhere around the nation. So, we’re pulling out all the stops to help Mary Joe Kennedy and Jo-Ann Shain, and thousands of other loving couples like them, get married this year.”The video contains a simple but profound message—one you’re likely already in support of if you’re a reader of Equally Wed. But we’re sharing it with you today in the hopes that you’ll help HRC reach its goal—and help the Empire State achieve marriage equality.
