The poll, which was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs &amp; Corporate Communications, surveyed 1,007 adults from August 11 to August 16.  When asked whether the federal government should give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex, 52 percent responded \u201cYes,\u201d while only 46 percent responded \u201cNo.\u201d Two percent said they \u201cDon\u2019t know.\u201d  When more broadly asked whether same-sex couples should be entitled to the same government benefits as married couples, or if the government should distinguish between them, 58 percent responded, \u201cYes, should be entitled to the same benefits.\u201d Only 38 percent responded \u201cNo, should distinguish between them.\u201d Three percent said they \u201cDon\u2019t know,\u201d while 1 percent refused to answer the question.
