While femmes can dress up a white dress with bows and beads, guys and butch women have to think of creative ways to add their personality to a solid colored suit or black tuxedo. The simplest way to do this is to wear a tie, cummerbund or vest set with a splash of color and maybe a fun pattern, but there are other fashion accessories you can add to your wedding-day look that will do the same thing in a more subtle way. Here are a few ideas:
Pocket Square
Place a colorful pocket square, also known as a handkerchief, in your jacket pocket. The little bit of color will really pop against a dark suit. Shown: Silk Lime Plaid Pocket Square, $69.50, Paul Stuart
Belt
Brides aren’t the only ones who can wear a something blue. Symbolizing fidelity, a groom can wear a number of something-blue items, such as socks, a suit or shirt. This Tinted Multi Stripe Belt by Paul Smith is a nice accessory for a suit and can be worn after the wedding. $120, paulsmith.co.uk
Socks
You’ve probably seen a number of real wedding photos where the groom’s pop of color is a bright pair of socks. This hidden accessory can be as bold as you want. I have to admit it was hard to choose the perfect pair of colored or patterned socks for this post, so I decided to feature these navy-and-yellow Smiley Face Socks by Corgi. $34, barneys.com
Underwear
If you want to keep your wedding-day look as formal as possible but still want to add a bit of color or personality slip on a pair of underwear and it’ll be you and your fiancé’s little secret. Polo Ralph Lauren’s Candy Shop Trunk is available in a rainbow of colors. $40.50, figleaves.com
Cufflinks
Available in a wide range of colors and themes, cufflinks are a great gift to give your fiancé as a wedding present as he or she will be able to be worn long after your wedding day. This pair of pink Crystal Heart cufflinks is made of solid silver. $195, thomaspink.com
