What will you be doing on Sept. 13? Well, cancel those plans because you’re not going to want to miss the new web series Husbands, created by media’s favorite gay Renaissance Man Brad “Cheeks” Bell and Jane Espenson (genius writer behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, and the brand new primetime series Once Upon a Time).
The comedic storyline follows a gay couple comprised of an actor (played by Bell) and a professional athlete (Sean Hemeon) who have only been dating six weeks. After celebrating a new marriage equality law in Nevada, they wake up together in Vegas finding themselves hitched (whoops!). Because of their social statuses, word is quickly out and what happens in Vegas does not stay in Vegas. Determined to make it work, they go through the hijinks of falling in love like any other couple, except, of course, first came marriage, and then comes, well … we’ll just have to wait and see.
Described by the cast as “a gay I Love Lucy,” it’s one of the few times that we’ve seen a same-sex marriage portrayed in entertainment, and we’re hoping even more will soon follow suit. “I’m so proud to be involved with this show,” Espenson tells TheInsider.com. “Marriage equality provides a fantastic jumping off place for our story … but we’re not about an issue, exactly. We’re about being as funny and entertaining as we can be. If marriage equality is just shown as part of the world, than that’s just about starting with a world that makes sense.”
