New Beginnings
“Nothing is so beautiful as spring,” wrote poet Gerard Manley Hopkins in 1918. Though there’s certainly an argument for every season’s beauty, spring offers a decidedly different point of view from all the rest. It rings of new beginnings—with the blooms of trees and flowers taking the gardens and parks by storm, baby animals and birds coming into the world and even in your own home with a deep spring cleaning of your cluttered drawers and closets.
Planning a spring wedding is perfect for the theme of beginning anew, for it is the occasion of your wedding that you and your beloved are starting a new life together. To help you in your planning, we’ve gathered some of the hottest trends for spring weddings, from flowers and color palettes to fashion for both men and women. This season’s all about bright hues and lightweight fabrics—find your perfect shade and shape in our pages.
In this issue, we highlight four wonderful couples who all recently started their life together as a married unit. Each love story is uniquely special. Brittney and Kara inspire us with their use of family members as officiates of their wedding, making the ceremony all the more personal. P-Jaye and Yolanda teach us with their private wedding weekend that sometimes you’ve just got to put everyone else’s feelings aside and take care of your needs as a couple. The love between adorable New Yorkers Alison and Irene is enviable, and they planned a well-suited wedding day to match their fun personalities. And we’re just unabashedly drooling about Jason and Eric’s no-holds-barred Napa nuptials.
Also in our latest publication is Dr. Loren A. Olson’s candid recollection of planning his own gay wedding—and how his grandchildren reacted—in an excerpt from his new book, Finally Out: Letting Go of Living Straight. Dr. Olson’s honesty is refreshing—as his family’s. It’s not always about changing people’s perceptions of what it means to be gay or planning a gay wedding, but rather just allowing the important people in your lives to prove to you that they will stand by you and love you no matter what. And sometimes, all that really matters is will there be cake?
