When Pope Benedict claimed that gay marriage was a “threat to humanity” during his annual State of the World address on Monday, it sparked an outcry from gay marriage advocates.
The ladies of “The View” took on the controversial claim during yesterday’s show, all outwardly disagreeing with the Pope’s stance.
Barbara Walters questions, “It brings up the whole definition, with we’re struggling with in this day of age, of what’s a family. Is the only purpose of marriage to procreate? What he’s saying is that if you don’t have marriage and you don’t procreate, you’ll wipe out humanity.”
“Gay marriage doesn’t affect my marriage,” proclaimed Elisabeth Hasselbeck. “For people to actually say that gay marriage is harming marriage, and the idea of marriage, is inhumane.”
Sherri Shepherd brought to light the numerous child abuse and gay sex scandals that have rattled the Catholic Church. “You’ve got a lot of people who are condemning things and they haven’t cleaned house themselves, and they’re doing the same things that they’re condemning people for,” she noted.
Or perhaps, his controversial proclamation is due to Joy Behar’s theory, as she joked, “Somebody wasn’t invited to Elton John’s wedding.”
