Bridal designers get daring with these red-hot looks.
By Anne Chertoff
The majority of wedding dresses shown at the April 2012 bridal week shows were in various shades of white and ivory. And while some designers may toss in a bit of blush or something blue, it’s very rare that a bold and daring color makes it pass the designer’s sketchbook and onto the runway. This season several designers dared to go beyond traditional white and featured a show-stopping gown in red.
Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta began his runway with a rich burgundy Shakespearean-style gown and ended with a romantic red lace ball gown with a matching mantilla while Romona Keveza also ended her show with a red finale dress—a voluminous ball gown, each making a fashion-forward statement.

But it was the all-red collection by Vera Wang that had everyone talking.
Inspired by love (and perhaps her soon-to-be expansion into the Asian market), Wang decided to create her “Mei Meng” collection of wedding gowns in shades of red. The dresses included both figure-hugging mermaids and princess ball gowns all in shades of red—from a very bright hue to a dark maroon. Each dress has the couture look Vera Wang is known for with yards of delicate lace and tulle, tiered skirts, ruching and hand-crafted details. And in case you were wondering, each dress will be available in ivory too.
