As Great Britain toys with the idea of marriage equality, a student group is taking action this holiday season to encourage Prime Minister David Cameron to push for same-sex marriage legislation.
The National Union of Students has created a campaign around festive e-cards that the public can send to Cameron, but with a gay twist: an “I Saw Daddy Kissing Santa Claus” theme.
“We are excited to see students getting involved and telling the government we are tired of waiting for equal marriage,” said NUS LGBT officer Finn McGoldrick. “It’s important because separate is never equal and lgbt students know they have a right to equality.”
“It’s a different campaign because it’s grassroots, it’s the community coming together to demand equal marriage now,” Finn added. “No more stalling Mr Cameron, all we want for Christmas is a vote on equal marriage!”
Cameron is a supporter of equality but is seeing resistance from his own Conservative Party, including gay member of Parliament, MP Conor Burns. “I marvel at why we’re bringing this forward. There is no clamor for this at all within the gay community,” Burns said to a reporter.
The U.K. currently offers marriage-like civil partnerships to gay couples. Hopefully, these e-cards will remind Cameron that it’s worth fighting for, and that yes, there is clamor for this within the gay community.
