New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who recently created his very own Super PAC to back candidates from either party, as long as they support marriage equality, is once again putting his money where his mouth is.
The independent billionaire announced today that he will match homestretch contributions in Maine, Minnesota and Washington, pledging up to $250,000 to Washington United for Marriage, $125,000 to Mainers United for Marriage and $125,000 to Minnesotans United for All Families. If the challenge is successful, it will raise a total of $1 million for marriage equality.
“Government has no business denying marriage licenses to a whole class of couples in Maine, Minnesota, Washington or anywhere else,” said the mayor. “The 14th Amendment guarantees us all equal protection under the law, and marriage equality is the next big step in America’s long march of freedom. The barriers to it are bound to fall; the question is not if but when. I was proud to help support the successful effort to achieve marriage equality in New York State, and I’m proud to stand with supporters of marriage equality around the country this November.”
This follows his hefty, $250,000 contribution to Maryland’s same-sex marriage support forces last week.
With the fate of so many couples and families resting on the ballot box this November, these last two weeks are crucial in the fight for marriage equality. So let’s give it one last push and make sure Mayor Bloomberg is writing the max amount from his checkbook, shall we? Go here to donate:
