equality-ohioMore than 200 Cleveland same-sex couples joined in matrimony Saturday, March 24, after a rally organized by Equality Ohio.

Activists’ speeches—on Cleveland City Hall’s steps—followed the mass wedding. Judy Benson of Old Lesbians Organizing for Change said the right to legally marry would greatly benefit same-sex couples.

“Old gay couples have problems because the state will not sanction their marriage, like inheritances or social security benefits,” she said. “These are things that are freely given to male-female couples.”

The marriages aren’t legally recognized, but event organizers said they’d provide paperwork needed to get a marriage license when Ohio begins issuing them to same-sex couples.
