Joining many major corporations, the cell network T-Mobile recently voiced its support for marriage equality in Washington, preceding an upcoming referendum vote to legally recognize same-sex marriage in the state.
The company contributed $25,000 to Washington United for Marriage in support of ballot initiative Referendum 74 and voiced their position in a statement.
“T-Mobile has a long-standing focus on creating an inclusive workplace environment for our employees,” said interim CEO Jim Alling. “Our support of this issue is a reflection of our culture, how we do business, and our belief in the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.”
T-Mobile is based in Bellevue, Washington, and the company has approximately 4,800 employees working in Washington.
“As one of the top employers in the Puget Sound area, T-Mobile’s support demonstrates a commitment to employees, customers and communities in Washington state,” wrote Washington United for Marriage Campaign Manager Zach Silk on the organizations website.
Companies in Washington that have voiced support are Amazon, Microsoft, Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI) and Starbucks, amongst others. Microsoft donated $200,000 and Amazon’s CEO, Jeff Bezos, donated $2.5 million to the state’s marriage equality efforts.
Referendum 74, the ballot initiative to legally recognize marriage equality, comes after the Washington legislature passed marriage equality in Congress, but citizens have petitioned for a referendum vote. Washington is one of four states that have marriage equality votes on the ballot for the upcoming November election. The vote will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
