Marriage equality has been on a roller coaster ride in France. It seemed to be on the brink of an easy passage thanks to President Francois Hollande’s promised same-sex marriage bill, until a protest in Paris last weekend, which brought hundreds of thousands of people, signage in hand, gave supporters a dose of reality … it might be more difficult than anticipated.
Brands are beginning to rally behind gay marriage, including the esteemed Elle magazine, which launched their Marriage for All issue, set to hit newsstands on Friday. Editorial director Valérie Toranian writes:
“This debate is not primarily between old and modern, right and left, homophobes and progressives: there are gay, pro-marriage Catholics, left- and right-leaning psychologists fiercely attached to the symbolism of gender difference as a necessity for any potential child. There are feminists who advocate for IVF for lesbians, but who oppose surrogate mothers for gays because they denounce the commodification of women’s bodies.”
For those who are fluid French, you can read Toranian’s entire editor’s letter here.
President François Hollande’s equality bill is expected to go before Parliament within the next 10 days.
