Quick Q&A with Celebrity Wedding Planner David Tutera
By Hope S. Philbrick
David Tutera, who hosts My Fair Wedding on WE tv, has been honored by Modern Bride Magazine as one of the Top 25 Trendsetters of The Year, awarded “Best Celebrity Wedding Planner” by Life & Style Magazine, authored seven books including The Big White Book Of Weddings: The How-To Guide For The Savvy, Stylish Bride (St. Martins Press) and Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings (Disney Publishing), featured on Oprah, Good Morning America, CNN, as well as in People, USA Today and more. So when we recently crossed paths at an event, we weren’t about to pass up the chance to ask him a few quick questions. Ever gracious, he obliged before getting whisked away to a photo shoot.
Equally Wed: What do you advise same-sex couples consider when selecting a wedding site?
David Tutera: Planning a same-sex wedding is no different than planning any wedding—if you go in with that energy you open the door to receiving that energy. I say go in together to scope out a site and read the temperature of the people who own, run and operate it. You’ll know when you both feel comfortable and are treated courteously.
EW: What are the hottest wedding trends?
DT: I know what they should be! Express bold color. In 2012 and 2013, red is going to be big. Don’t be afraid to step so far out of the box that you can’t see where you began. Don’t go “safe.” Make it memorable, but not bizarre.
EW: How do you recommend couples personalize a space?
DT: Listen and learn to your wishes and hopes. I like the idea of creating a juxtaposition of the space and whatever makes it unique with additions that reflect the couple’s personality. Because then you walk away with a double memory.
