According to a Gallup Poll released today, opposition to gay marriage is 53 percent, down four percentage points from last year and at the lowest rate the poll has measured. Since 1996, when the Gallup began asking American’s opinion regarding the legality of gay marriage, opposition has dropped by 15 percent and approval has risen by 17 percent. Approval ratings are highest among liberal Democrats and among those living in the East and West. Opposition to gay marriage is highest among those who consider religion “very important” in their lives as well as those living in the South and the Midwest.
