Yesterday was a bad day (thanks, Mike Huckabee). But, one thing that I love about this community is that no one gives up, and instead of shrugging our shoulders and thinking that sucks, supporters of equality are DOING SOMETHING about it.
Here at Equally Wed, we’ve dubbed Tuesday, August 7 National Starbucks Appreciation Day. Not because we want to fight fire with fire (or chicken with coffee), but because we also have a right to support companies with the same beliefs as us, and in this fast food storm, we want to remind people that this is not a freedom of speech issue, it’s not even a political issue—it’s a human rights issue.
And we’re certainly not the only ones. Restaurants are beginning to speak out as well, and putting their money where their customer’s mouth is.
Located in New York City? Stop by Schnippers Quality Kitchen (locations at 620 Eighth Avenue at 41st Street and 23 East 23rd Street at Madison Avenue) any time in August and order their Chicken Filet sandwich. For each one sold, the restaurant will donate $1 to Marriage Equality USA. Owner Andrew Schnipper notes: “A truly good Chicken Filet Sandwich would always be in favor of Marriage Equality.”
Over on the West Coast, The Abbey Food and Bar in West Hollywood (692 North Robertson Boulevard, between Santa Monica Boulevard and Melrose Avenue) has created a Chick-For-Gay Sandwich, from which they’ll donate 100 percent of net proceeds to the American Foundation for Equal Rights and is available through the November elections. “With the upcoming election, even our lunch choices are a political statement. If corporations have the right to spend unlimited amounts of money on an agenda of hate, we as an LGBT business community have to spend money supporting Marriage Equality,” said David Cooley, founder of The Abbey. “If corporations have the same free speech rights as people, the people have to exercise their First Amendment right at the cash register by patronizing businesses that support our agenda and stop giving money to those that oppose equality.”
