On the heels of Frank Ocean’s coming out letter, hip-hop has another gay marriage advocate: Seattle-based rapper Macklemore. Same Love, written by Macklemore and featuring Mary Lambert, reflects on the way society treats homosexuality and same-sex marriage. His powerful lyrics tackle taboo subjects, such as how some believe there is a cure for being gay, and how “we paraphrase a book written 3,500 years ago.”

The video is just as powerful, portraying a man’s life as he comes to terms with his sexuality. It features clips of civil rights struggles from the ‘60s and contends, “The same fight that led to people to walk outs and sit ins/It’s human rights for everybody, there is no difference.”
The 29-year-old rapper’s reputation is growing, as many of his songs are about acceptance, self-reflection and change. With a new album coming out tomorrow, Macklemore’s message will be spread, hopefully leading to wider support from the hip-hop community and opening many people’s eyes to the struggle for basic human rights.
Check out the video for Same Love below. Macklemore’s album, “The Heist,” drops tomorrow.
