On March 3, 2010, Washington, D.C. became the sixth place in the United States to recognize same-sex marriage. The law was introduced in October and passed in December, but the Congressional review period kept licenses from being issued until it expired on March 2.

This past weekend, on March 20, a mass marriage was held at Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium, an ornately gilded historic venue on Constitution Avenue. The event was hosted by GLBT Wedding Services, who called the day “Our Time Has Come,” a title chosen to signify the long road that many couples have traveled to marriage. Ten couples participated in the event, receiving their marriage certificates.
