Denying LGBT citizens marriage equality could cost North Carolina talented professionals, Businessweek reports. That’s what Bank of America Global Technology and Operations Executive Catherine Bessant believes proposed Amendment One—instituting a constitutional ban on gay marriage—could do.
North Carolina already prohibits the state from giving same-sex couples marriage licenses. Bessant expressed her views in theYouTube video below.
“We’re in a war with other states across the country who would love to have the jobs that we have today,” Bessant said. “Amendment One has the potential to have a disastrous effect on our ability to attract talent and keep talent in the state of North Carolina.”
Bank of America spokeswoman Nicole Nastacie defended the video in an e-mail. Nastachie stressed the video was legitimate and said Bank of America wasn’t offering an opinion on Amendment One.
“Employees are allowed and encouraged to be involved in their personal capacity in dialogue and debate on important public issues,” she said.
