For the social media savvy, one of the perks of tying the knot is to finally switch that Facebook status from “engaged” to “married,” letting your entire network know that you are officially off the market.
Facebook, which was the first social media company to receive a GLAAD Award in June, has created new same-sex icons to pop up on newlyweds’ timelines when they make that exciting update, rather than the marriage icon used for straight married couples.
This isn’t the first change that Facebook has made to open the status umbrella to all relationships. Last year, it added “In a Civil Union” and “In a Domestic Partnership” options to user profiles.
