Back in 2011 during the beginning of Mitt Romney’s campaign trail, the soon-to-be Republican candidate stopped in New Hampshire to meet-and-greet with the public, including Vietnam War veteran Bob Garon and a video of the exchange has recently been making the Internet rounds.
The two chatted about Mr. Garon’s time in the armed forces, with Romney praising him and thanking him for his service. However, his views did a full 180 when he realized that Garon was (gasp!) gay.
Garon led the governor into questioning, starting with asking where he stood on same-sex marriage. Obviously, he stated that he believed marriage “should be between a man and a woman,” and the adorable old man continued saying, “… so if two men get married, a veteran’s spouse would not be entitled to any burial benefits or medical benefits, even though the serviceman has devoted his time and effort to his country, because you just don’t support the quality of same-sex marriage.”
“Everyone’s entitled to their constitutional right,” Garon goes on. “Actually, when the constitution was written, it was pretty clear that a marriage was between a man and a woman, and I don’t think the Supreme Court is going to change that,” Romney retorts.
When things begin to heat up, one of Romney’s minions conveniently says they have to leave. “You know what, Governor, good luck, you’re gonna need it,” says Garon.
