Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has officially endorsed marriage equality through the Human Rights Campaign Americans for Marriage Equality video series.
In the six-minute clip, she discusses the momentum this movement has seen over the last several years, her gay rights advocacy with foreign leaders and her own personal evolution on the topic, saying gays and lesbians are “full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship.”
“That includes marriage,” she says, adding that she backs gay marriage both “personally and as a matter of policy and law.”
After her historic “gay rights are human rights” speech at a 2011 U.N. conference, her proclamation hardly comes as a surprise, and has heightened rumors of a 2016 presidential run.
“A few years ago, Bill and I celebrated as our own daughter married the love of her life,” Clinton continued. “I wish every parent that same joy. To deny the opportunity to our own daughters and sons solely on the basis of who they are and who they love is to deny them the chance to live up to their own God-given potential.”
