An Associated Press poll published on Thursday reveals that more Americans support legal recognition of marriage between same-sex couples than do not. The poll, which was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications, surveyed 1,007 adults from August 11 to August 16.
When asked whether the federal government should give legal recognition to marriages between couples of the same sex, 52 percent responded “Yes,” while only 46 percent responded “No.” Two percent said they “Don’t know.”
When more broadly asked whether same-sex couples should be entitled to the same government benefits as married couples, or if the government should distinguish between them, 58 percent responded, “Yes, should be entitled to the same benefits.” Only 38 percent responded “No, should distinguish between them.” Three percent said they “Don’t know,” while 1 percent refused to answer the question.
The poll has a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points.
