Being an old, married gay couple could soon be possible in Colorado. Marriage equality supporters packed a Wednesday hearing at the Capitol, the Associated Press reports. It faces one big obstacle—Colorado Republicans.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper, a Democrat, supports gay marriage. Hickenlooper encouraged state lawmakers to pass civil union legislation during his January State of the State speech.

Gaining GOP support might not be hard. The bill is expected to breeze through the full Senate. Whether or not it would face an uphill battle in a Republican-controlled House remains to be seen.

Shawna Kempainnen and Lisa Green, a couple who voiced their concerns at the hearing, described their struggles with Green’s medical issues due to multiple sclerosis.

“Truthfully, I need to know that Shauna can have what she needs to care for me,” Green said. “Every moment that I can spend with Lisa feels like poetry,” said Kempainnen, adding that it’s wrong for the government “limit how far we can go on our journey.”
