Maryland’s marriage equality players are mobilizing, the Baltimore Sun reports. Debate on gay and lesbian Maryland citizens’ rights begins soon. The state’s General Assembly session will begin next week.
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley threw his support behind gay marriage after it became legal in New York—making quite the turnaround.
Maryland Marriage Alliance plans a vigil, a series of sermons and a “traditional marriage” rally. Supporters of gay marriage Marylanders for Marriage Equality will operate daily phone banks and descend on the state Capitol Feb. 13.
A proposed bill got through the state Senate last spring. However, it lost momentum in the House of Delegates. The bill was unable to garner the necessary 71 votes.
House Speaker Michael E. Busch said about 10 of its 141 members remains undecided.
