The New Hampshire Union Ledger is refusing to publish marriage announcements for same-sex couples. Although gay marriage has been legally recognized in the state since January, the paper, a daily publication with the largest circulation in the state, on Saturday defended its refusal to publish the wedding notice of Aurelio Time and Greg Gould, a New Hampshire native.
According to the Boston Globe, Union Ledger Publisher Joe McQuaid explained that while not “anti-gay,” the newspaper is opposed to New Hampshire’s marriage equality law. In a statement, McQuaid said, “While the law sanctions gay marriage, it neither demands that churches perform them or that our First Amendment right to choose what we print be suspended. We continue our longstanding policy of printing letters to the editor from New Hampshire citizens, whether or not they agree with us.’’
