As mothers of twin toddlers, my wife and I have hopefully taken all possible options of discrimination away from our oppressors with the universally recognized second-parent adoption, so both our names are on our children’s birth certificate, therefore giving us equal rights to our children and them to us. If our marriage was recognized federally and even worldwide, we wouldn’t have to do this. We had to jump through so many hoops that a straight couple wouldn’t have to, even if the second parent (the father in a heterosexual couple’s case) wasn’t a biological parent. The straight couple can add both their names to the birth certificate with zero questions from the doctors or hospital. When we find funding from good-hearted and savvy business investors, we will launch Equally Family as a sister site to Equally Wed, where we will continue our work bringing visibility to LGBT families and the challenges we face. One such challenge is expertly recognized by MarriageEqualty.ie, with its video “Rory’s Story” that discusses yet another reason marriage equality should be universally offered.
MarriageEquality.ie is the online presence for Marriage Equality, an organization dedicated to achieving equal access to civil marriage for same-sex couples in Ireland.
