No cake for you. That’s what Des Moines, Iowa-area baker told a lesbian couple. Victoria’s Cake Cottage owner Victoria Childress, said she couldn’t bring herself to help Trina Vodraska and Janelle Sievers make their wedding day special, according to care2.com.
KCCI.com reported Childress’ Christian convictions kept her from fulfilling Sievers and Vodraska’s request.
“I didn’t do the cake because of my convictions for their lifestyle,” Childress added. “It is my right as a business owner. And it’s not to discriminate against them.”
Saying it’s not discrimination doesn’t make it so, according to the state of Iowa. The Iowa Civil Rights Act forbids business owners from refusing service based on someone’s sexual orientation.
Sievers and Vodraska didn’t really know how to respond to the situation.
“I don’t think either one of us knew what to say. We were just shocked,” Sievers said.
Vodraska said she felt degraded.
“It was like she chastised us for wanting to do business with her,” Vodraska said. “I know Jesus loves me. I didn’t need her to tell me that. I didn’t go there for that. I just wanted to go there for a cake.”
Despite the uproar, Childress told the UPI she’s holding fast to her Christian belief.
“It is my right as a business owner. It is my right, and it’s not to discriminate against them,” she said. “It’s not so much to do with them, it’s to do with me and my walk with God and what I will answer [to] him for.”
