Bermuda plans to rescind marriage equality just months after it was voted into law. Same-sex marriage has only been legal in Bermuda since May, but just seven months later, it seems to be on its way out, being replaced by the Domestic Partnership Act.
Th socially conservative island was filled with opposition back in May with the ruling. Now, the Bermuda Senate gave legislative approval this week to end same-sex marriage, approving the new Domestic Partnership Act with an 8-3 vote. It moved on to the House of Assembly who approved it 24-10. All that’s left is an official signature by the governor and it will become law.
Luckily, this decision is not retroactive, which means that the six same-sex marriages that have taken place since May will still be legally recognized.
