Equality doesn’t completely happen once a bill is signed into law … it happens when it’s considered “normal.” When a man can kiss his new husband without the world pointing fingers and when a vendor uses terminology to encompass all types of couples.
It happens when the world treats a same-sex wedding as just another part of society.
I’ve recently noticed companies integrating this into their commercials. Both Amazon and Microsoft recently debuted ads that included same-sex couples and, though the two mega corporations have officially backed marriage equality, these commercials include it without being in our face. No pride flags being thrown, no political statements. Just regular commercials featuring regular couples in love—as it should be.
Of course, seeing this inclusiveness being brought into our living rooms during our favorite primetime TV shows is exciting in itself—after all, this topic is currently being debated at the highest level. But it’s a glimpse into what the future holds. A future where marriage isn’t just a right … it’s the norm.
