Some elopements are a dream come true. Bri and Noel married in the scenic landscape of Carson, Washington. On the day of their mountain elopement, Bri dressed in a detailed lace gown that trailed along the forest floor. Noel wore suspenders and a collared shirt. Family and guests were encouraged to choose their own boho earth-toned attire. With the river rushing in the background, the two brides embraced after their first look. They said their vows in a forest grove with nothing but pine needles and earth for an “aisle.”
Their elopement was full of fairy-tale scenery, but like many LGBTQ+ couples, their location could be challenging. “There were times when it was difficult to feel comfortable sharing wedding plans,” Bri told Equally Wed. “Living in Eastern Washington and northern Idaho can make being openly lesbian difficult. The area is known for being deeply conservative, Christian, and at times anti-gay.” Like many LGBTQ+ couples, the women said their biggest challenge was finding support from their own families. “We wanted our families to fully support us, but it took time for them to understand the depth of our love.”
Despite these challenges, Bri said, “The amount of love we received from friends, shops, the venue, and the community was amazing. It felt incredible, and so validating to be so fully embraced during the most exciting time in our life.” On the day of the wedding, each marrier walked down the aisle with her father.
To other LGBTQ+ couples, they advise: “Few things in life are more rewarding than the opportunity to love and be loved in return. For those whose love faces the world every day, do not give up. Hold on even tighter. Dedicate yourself to your partner. Commit, laugh, and love harder than you ever have before. Your love is unique. Your love is worth fighting for.”
