Same-sex marriage remains safe in Iowa. Democrat Liz Mathis’ defeat of Republican Cindy Golding for an Iowa state senate seat ensures a Democratic majority—while avoiding a possible referendum on gay marriage, OnTop Magazine reports.
Mathis, pictured above left embracing former Iowa State Senator Swati Dandekar, earned 56 percent of the vote in the special election, which served as the perfect chance to end Democrats’ one-seat Senate majority. Majority Leader Michael Gronstal has led the charge to repeal the Hawkeye state’s gay marriage law.
“I pledge to the voters of this district: I will go to the Capitol and fight for you every day. I will be your voice in the state Senate,” Mathis said.
Anti-gay groups like the National Organization for Marriage and The Family Leader donated heavily to the race with a $1 million price tag.
