Huge congratulations are in order for Teresa Pires and Helena Paixao, who wed on Monday in Portugal’s first legally recognized same-sex marriage. The lesbian couple has been together since 2003, and has been fighting for marriage equality since they were first denied the right to marry in 2006. Portuguese President Aníbal Cavaco Silva ratified a law legalizing same-sex marriage in May, making Portugal the sixth European nation to allow gay marriage.
