Marriage equality hearings in Washington state began in its House and Senate on Monday. A gay marriage bill is one vote short of reality, the Seattle Times reports.

It’s put five undecided senators on the hot seat. Constituents have bombarded lawmakers with calls and emails, while lobbyists have mobbed legislators.
A coalition of religious conservatives is campaigning against gay marriage. The National Organization for Marriage pledged $250,000 toward defeating any Republican supporting the bill. Washington United for Marriage, a group of religious, labor and community groups as well as corporations, is championing marriage equality. Microsoft is among those corporations.
