Pattern mixing has been one of the hottest trends in fashion for the last two seasons, but it’s much more difficult to pull off than the easy-to-style black-and-white wedding ensemble. We analyzed three layered looks and offered tips to inspire your own mix-and-match outfit.

STRIPES
Vary color shades by mixing bright colors with darker ones, like this bright green blazer and dark navy vest. Add a striped shirt and bow tie for a dazzling effect—the key to mixing stripes is for one of the patterns to be noticeably larger than the other.

PLAIDS
This dark grey and purple combo works together beautifully and the white shirt and boutonnière balances out the darker shades. And once again, mixing small patterns with larger ones works in favor of the checked pocket square against the plaid suit.

DOTS
This ensemble combines the textures of a tweed grey jacket with a navy knit tie and a plaid shirt. As each variation is rather understated, the combinations complement each other and bring out the richness of the blue tie. The pink polka-dot pocket square adds a brave pop of color.
