With the popularity of AMC’s Mad Men and vintage-obsessed starlets such as Zooey Deschanel and Sarah Jessica Parker, designers such Vera Wang and Melissa Sweet are designing shorter dresses in response to the retro glamour fashion movement that seems to be sweeping the nation. Although many brides change into a shorter dress for their reception, many are taking to wearing them for their ceremony as well.
Katherine Robinson, owner of WhirlingTurban.com told the Los Angeles Times, “I really think the long dresses—to me now anyway, and I think to a lot of girls, looks too formal … it looks anachronistic and not in a good way. It looks ridiculously formal.” Adds Kleinfeld Bridal fashion director Randy Fenoli, “The average height of a woman is 5 feet 5 inches and petite starts at 5 feet 4 inches. Having something with a natural waistline or empire waistline will make her legs look longer.”
