
In a SCOTUS ruling during the morning of June 26, 2013 DOMA is ruled unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment. In a 5-4 ruling, the court struck Section 3 of the 17-year-old Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). A SCOTUS blogger writes, as the ruling, is being annouced “What this means, in plain terms, is that same-sex couples who are legally married will be entitled to equal treatment under federal law– with regard to, for example, income taxes and Social Security benefits.”
