Congratulations are in order! Beloved rapper Da Brat and her wife, Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart, are expecting a baby! The couple tied the knot in February 2022, and started their journey to becoming pregnant soon after.

Harris-Dupart had three children when she married the Grammy nominee, for whom kids were never really part of the plan. Da Brat, who was the first female solo rapper to sell one million copies, tells PEOPLE Magazine that, at 48, “I never thought I was going to have kids. I just thought it wasn’t in the cards for me. I’ve had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn’t get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn’t going to happen for me.”

The Funkdafied artist’s coming-out story has been nearly 25 years in the making. A staple of the 90s hip-hop scene, Da Brat kept her personal life relatively private until opening up about her sexuality in 2020. “[I came out] because of her inspiring me,” Da Brat says of her now-wife, “and wanting to scream it from the mountaintops that I found somebody that I am totally in love with and I don’t want to hide it anymore.”

After deciding that they wanted a child together, the hopeful parents chose an anonymous sperm donor from their cryobank, and after a long and arduous fertility journey, Da Brat is now in her second trimester. The moms-to-be celebrated their pregnancy with a gangster-inspired photoshoot that encapsulates Da Brat’s tough persona in the hip-hop world.

In addition to creating new music and co-hosting The Rickey Smiley Morning Show and Dish Nation, Da Brat stars alongside her wife on their WE TV reality show, Brat Loves Judy, which is set to premiere its third season this April. We are so excited to watch their love story blossom as their family grows!
