Marriage equality has stopped short in Wyoming thanks to the state House Corporations, Elections and Political Subdivisions Committee, which killed the bill on Monday in a 5-4 vote.
Instead, a domestic partnership bill advances in the state that is ironically known as the Equality State after two hours of outrageous arguments against gay marriage, including moral and public health concerns.
Rep. Cathy Connolly (D-Laramie), the state’s only openly gay elected official, listened on as her colleagues insulted the community, including Rep. Lynn Hutchings who said being gay was a choice and referencing to her ex-fiance who “decided to become straight.”
However, gay rights advocates remain hopeful reflecting on the fact that, not only did the marriage equality bill lose by one vote, but the domestic partnership bill advanced in a Republican-controlled committee.
“For us to come out of a committee where we’re outnumbered 8-1 is certainly a victory,” said Connolly.
