Washington state Sen. Steve Litzow, who describes himself as a “traditional Republican,” is going against the grain, according to the Advocate. Litzow announced, in a Seattle Times editorial, he’ll be the chamber’s first Republican to champion marriage equality.

The move is sure to boost the gay marriage law, which Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire plans to introduce this week.
“When you think about gay marriage, it’s the right thing to do and it’s very consistent with the tenets of being a Republican—such as individual freedom and personal responsibility,” Litzow said.
New York and Maryland Republicans have used the same rhetoric in trumpeting their support of marriage equality laws.
