The struggle to find comfortable wedding shoes is real. Dress shoes haven’t always been my friend either. I have wide feet, a heavy frame and Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disorder that, among other things, causes painful inflammation in my hips and knees. I used to suffer through a carousel of killer kitten heels, mile-high cheap pleather heels and strappy sandals that my skin bulged through, begging for release. I wore these torture devices because I liked how they looked, but I couldn’t bear to wear them for longer than an hour or two. Even the $300 white wedding shoes I just had to have for my own wedding were such a nightmare of radiating pain that I swapped them with an older broken-in pair of pink pumps an hour before my wedding. When I got pregnant with our twins the year after Mo and I wed, I chucked aside all of that “suffering in the name of fashion” nonsense and began prioritizing comfort. It’s been a lovely 13 years of flats, mules, dressed-up sneakers and sandals with enough bling to pull off a professional look when needed.
