“Neesy and I met on Instagram six years ago, way back before DMs were a thing and you had to shamelessly flirt on pictures for everyone to see. She found my page through someone we were both following, and she decided to start following me. We had a few exchanges, just some likes and flirting but nothing too crazy until one night I came home and saw she just liked another selfie of mine. Not thinking anything of it, since she lived in Los Angeles and I was in New York, I made a more bold move and did the shameless move of liking a few posts back to back and leaving a comment so my name would show up in her feed.

Well, it worked. We began talking and exchanged numbers. Our chemistry from the first conversation was crazy! There were times we’d call each other because of how easy it felt. Morning till night, we didn’t skip a beat talking. With the time difference, I was sacrificing sleep to stay on her schedule because I couldn’t get enough learning about er.

She flew to New York three months after we started talking so that we could meet in person, and it proved our chemistry was even better. The days flew by; it was easy. When it came time for her to go home, Neesy missed her flight home purposely for a few more hours with me.

I flew out a month later to California to be a part of her world, where she took me up in a helicopter at sunset to ask me to officially be her girlfriend. By month six, I moved to California, because we said, “If we’re gonna do this, why not do it right and be together?” It was the biggest leap of faith. We trusted every feeling that led us to one another and it didn’t fail us.

Fast forward to our fast approaching six-year anniversary, and Neesy pulled out all the stops to pull off this proposal! She was aligning everything for the entire year. My family lives on the East Coast, and she had them tell me about two months prior that they wanted to come visit for a weekend. At first, I was a little bummed it was on our anniversary weekend, but any effort to visit was appreciated. She slowly slid in that she was required to work one of the weekend days my family would be in town, even had her boss send out a fake email to support the story.

A little bit more bummed about this, Neesy said she would plan something for us to all do together when she got out of work that afternoon. I kept pressing for details but she’d give me none. Just kept saying, “Trust me and let me surprise you and make this up to you!”

She played the part, got up super early and ready for work on a Saturday morning, September 14, 2019, and interacted with us like nothing was happening and then “left for work.” She told me to be ready by a certain time and then she’d let me know where we’re going. I took my mom shopping and almost ran into Neesy’s mom and brother in town (which they live two hours from us) so that would have been a dead giveaway.

Neesy was running around LA finalizing the details before asking me to meet her at OUE Skyspace LA. I showed up to the building with my family, and it was an adventure getting inside, to say the least! The staff knew about the proposal, so they were all stalling me from getting to my final destination: Neesy. After security, and the staff stalling me at every turn, making me wait what seemed like hours for the elevator, we got to the 70th floor, and they directed us to our right.

As soon as I turned the corner, our song started playing loudly overhead. At first, I thought I was imagining it. Then it clicked, I looked at my mom and started sobbing. I started looking for Neesy but couldn’t see her yet, I kept walking and spotted a picture of us and roses.

They opened the door for me, and she was standing there, took my hand and led me down a candlelit path with our pictures. Starting with the beginning and ending with our most recent. She took my hand, overlooking Los Angeles at sunset and spoke her heart to me, got on one knee and asked me if I would marry her! Completely lost in a daze, I heard cheering. She had not only my family fly in, but also her family, my friends from home on FaceTime, and all of our friends there to celebrate with us. There are truly no words that could describe the feeling of watching her smile, looking into my eyes and asking me to spend forever with her, but I would relive that moment over and over again!” —from Kristina, one half of the couple
