LGBTQ pioneer Edith Windsor has passed away at the age of 88. Windsor will forever be known as the gay-rights activist who inspired the landmark Supreme Court case that brought down DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act. This ruling granted federal recognition to same-sex married couples for the first time, including federal benefits.
Windsor died in Manhattan. Her death was confirmed by her wife of one year, Judith Kasen-Windsor. No cause of death has been disclosed.
