Clergy members in North Carolina are filing a lawsuit that fights for marriage equality.
In a new turn of events, clergy members in North Carolina are filing a lawsuit against the state’s ban on same-sex marriage, stating that it violates their religious freedom.
The clergy members involved in the lawsuit say that they want the freedom to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies in their congregations, but they aren’t allowed to because of the existing ban.
The lawsuit, which was filed Monday morning in federal court, involves a dozen clergy members and the United Church of Christ, a church with over a million members.
Jake Sussman, attorney for the clergy members, stated that the lawsuit has opened a “new front” for limitation in marriage equality. Normally, lawsuits that fight marriage equality bans are filed by same-sex couples within the state in question. It’s certainly exciting to see a pro-marriage equality lawsuit filed by members of clergy, especially in a southern state.
Earlier in April, North Carolina was hit with lawsuit from same-sex couples who were facing health concerns.
