Tomie and Alli Wheeler were married on Monday, March 9, 2015, at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. Unfortunately because of the same-sex marriage halt in Alabama, they are not currently legally recognized in their state despite planning their wedding when marriage equality was offered. Alli and Tomie drove to Florida the week before to get legally married.
From Alli:
“My personal favorite part of the day was when Tomie’s uncle, Steve had showed up. Tomie’s family are not the most supportive when it comes to her choices. She called him only a few days before the wedding to tell him and when she saw him actually at the garden, she couldn’t do anything but cry and give him a huge hug. The pictures of those two are some of the most beautiful pictures I have ever seen.”
“Everything Tomie and I have done together has been effortless, including the wedding. We couldn’t have done it without the help of some amazing friends, of course. But every time Tomie and I set out to do something, everything falls into place for us. At the beginning of our relationship, it was maintaining a long-distance relationship, happily. After only 3 months of dating, I moved 800 miles just to be with her and now we are on this new journey, together, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.”
