Phyllis Young, who runs the Aloha Bed & Breakfast in Hawaii, appealed the Supreme Court’s ruling that the bed and breakfast violated a state anti-discrimination law by refusing to serve a lesbian couple. The Supreme Court recently rejected this appeal, declining to hear a challenge in the lower courts, which means Young will face a penalty for violating the law.
In 2007, Young denied renting a room to Diane Cervilli and Taeko Bufford, a lesbian couple, citing her religious beliefs. Young’s case was appealed to the justices in the wake of the 2018 decision siding with a baker from Colorado who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. Last year, the Hawaii Supreme Court also rejected Young’s appeal, which has been unresolved since the couple filed a lawsuit in 2011.
